PreviouslyVP of Engineering, OutSystems,
Sqreen are a Paris head-quartered SaaS company offering Application Security Management to developers. They have recently raised a Series A round of $14 million, led by Greylock, with existing investors Y Combinator, Alven and Point Nine also participating.
Sqreen’s founding team were formerly in leadership engineering roles within Apple, so they set a very high bar for technology talent! It was quickly apparent that the right candidate would likely need to be relocated, given the scarcity of this talent in the French market. Erevena was hired to execute an international search across Europe and the USA to access leaders of the calibre required.
Product and Engineering sit at the founding HQ in Paris with Go To Market being led from San Francisco. Having hired in a Director of Engineering from Google, we sought to bolster the leadership by future proofing with a VP capable of scaling the team to 200 and beyond. Matching domain expertise and commensurate scaling journey of the team made this a highly complex search if there weren’t to be compromises on profile.
With relocation proving a sticking point to access talent, we decided to augment the context of scaling to accommodate the best candidates. We presented a series of options of candidates who were in similar time zones to Paris, had deep networks to set up a secondary engineering site and travel extensively to HQ. The best cultural and business fit was Nuno Antunes from OutSystems.
The Erevena team pushed for information and discussed potential dream candidates but also potential trade-offs. They set expectations very well at the beginning – very smart. Sam worked like crazy and went beyond the financial rationale. If we were less picky we could have done it sooner, but we are delighted with the end result of hiring Nuno in Lisbon. They have set the bar very high for other search firms.
