Deputy makes simple, cutting-edge employee scheduling, time tracking and workforce management software for businesses that employ workers who participate in the shift work economy. There are over 1 million shift workers from more than 250,000 workplaces globally using the Deputy platform. Deputy was founded and is headquartered in Sydney, Australia and has offices in the US and UK. The company has raised over $100M from investors including OpenView and IVP.
Deputy has almost 400 employees across their global offices, with new executive leaders that joined the business in the prior 18 months to strengthen the team. The CEO, CFO, Product and Engineering leaders are based in Sydney while Go to Market leadership is based in the Bay Area. A Chief People Officer was seen as an important hire to define and execute an innovative and intentional People strategy; one which could build on the 40% increase in engagement scores the business recorded over the prior year. Deputy’s mission is to help create thriving workplaces for their customers and they wanted to ensure the same for their own employees.
Cultural and philosophical alignment was an important key requirement. Deputy people are mission driven and are serious about living the vision and values in the day to day. There is also a clear humility, transparency and authenticity in each interaction – the team felt ‘real’. We also needed someone with the depth of experience to lead an organisation of this scale and global footprint, and with clear plans to grow further still. We also wanted this person to be business-minded, and take an innovative and experimental lens to defining People programs, building an employer brand, and leaning into the types of People opportunities that are available when leading HR for a HR tech business. With the company having shifted well to remote and hybrid working, we sought a leader that could adapt well to this modern form of company building in a post-Covid world.
Jodi Garg was recognized as a strong fit to the specified requirements. Jodi has spent time at high calibre global organisations such as ServiceNow, Equinix and eBay, as well as start ups like Drawbridge. She also had strong stints serving as a consultant with Deloitte and a Director of Operations for CNA Insurance. With an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon, Jodi had a breath of experience and educational grounding that has positioned her to be a highly effective, innovative and business-minded People leader.
