Memrise is a language learning platform on iOS, Android and web; it has more than 150 courses across 25 languages. The app has over 35M users with 1M+ new registered users per month. They have been profitable since 2016. Memrise was founded based on an interest in human consciousness and how this can be expanded through learning.
Search Background
Having raised investment from Balderton and Octopus Ventures, Memrise were looking to hire a CMO. This CMO would be required to create and execute a marketing strategy that will grow the Memrise user base to 100s of millions of installs and impact the ROI across both organic and paid. This CMO will minimise CAC, maximise LTV through CRM and other tools and also maximise conversion of users.
Requirements
As Memrise had predominantly scaled organically there was a need to bring in a CMO who would be able to build a best-in-class marketing function through great brand building, exceptional digital marketing channels and performance marketing execution. The business needed to hire significant headcount to support the global growth and as a result required a proven marketing mentor and leader who was able to own all functions of marketing whilst being part of the executive management team.
Result
Erevena performed a pan-European search and secured Lucy Milne for Memrise. Lucy’s career started in the telco sector in a 13-year stint with Orange/EE where she led varied activities from corporate marketing to SMB to Channel Communications. She then joined David Buttress at Just Eat to lead Marketing for the UK. She owned digital acquisition, customer engagement, brand. Regional marketing and business intelligence as well as working as interim CMO. The business IPO’d during this tenure. She then worked as CMO at eMoov prior to joining Memrise.
